"Cinema by the Sea"
Arriving 2013!!!
Promoting film appreciation and the artistic growth of independent filmmakers
This city is steeped in the history of the film
industry. Few people know that Long
Beach was the home of Balboa Producing Amusement Company, the first silent film
studio in California, at the turn of the century. Throughout the golden age of Hollywood, the
Queen Mary (now docked at the Port of Long Beach) hosted many cinematic
luminaries of the time, including Bob Hope, Laurel and Hardy, Gloria Swanson,
and Clark Gable. Long Beach is still
used for filmmaking today; many major movies and television shows have shot
footage within the city. The Long Beach
Film Festival aims to keep the rich filmmaking tradition of this city alive
by encouraging emerging filmmakers and exposing the community to the magic of
the silver screen.
The Long Beach Film Festival will showcase feature-length films, shorts, documentaries, and student films from local (and not-so-local) filmmakers to revive the historic film culture of Long Beach and explore the controversial, experimental, and avant-garde uses of film as a communication medium.
